Investments (stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, alternative investments such as private equity and hedge funds) and other balance sheet entities (receivables, payables etc.) are managed within FoundationHub using Securities.
Each Security has a unique identifier known as a CUSIP. The CUSIP can either be a “real” CUSIP, meaning one that matches to an actual security (e.g., Microsoft Common Stock's CUSIP is 594918104), or it can be a “synthetic” CUSIP that has no meaning in the outside world but is a unique identifier on FoundationHub. Please note that many “real” CUSIPs also have an associated Ticker Symbol (e.g., Microsoft’s Ticker Symbol is MSFT) but this is not the case for all “real” securities (e.g., corporate and government bonds do not have ticker symbols but do have CUSIPs) so FoundationHub uses the CUSIP since this is a universal identifier.
